Dr Joanna Staneva is a Senior Scientist and Head of the Department “Hydrodynamics and  Data Assimilation” at Helmholtz Centre Hereon, Germany. She holds a Diploma in Physics and a PhD in Physical Oceanography from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. Dr. Staneva has expertise in marine research, research management, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her work includes modeling the marine environment, earth system modeling, ocean predictability, climate dynamics, and coastal and regional oceanography. She actively contributes to scientific advancement by coordinating the Horizon Europe project FOCCUS and participating in international and national projects. Her work focuses on the development of best practice guidelines and standards for Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs). As co-chair of the Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) programme, she is dedicated to promoting collaboration between scientists, policy makers and stakeholders. Joanna Staneva is also a partner in the EDITO Model Lab project, leading the development of what-if scenarios. In projects like MANCOGA, endorsed by the Ocean Decade, she contributes to the development of digital twins for mangroves as nature-based solutions for the East Coast of Ghana. Additionally, she participates in the Horizon Europe mission OLAMUR, focusing on the co-use of marine resources, and the Green Deal REST-COAST project on coastal ecosystem restauration. She collaborates on integrated modeling and observations to address real-world ocean challenges, leveraging DTOs for sustainable ocean management and enhancing ocean governance.
