Dr Jaime Letelier
Head of Dept. of Oceanography and Environment
Dr. Jaime Letelier Pino is the current Head of the Oceanography and Environment Department of the Fisheries Research Division at the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP).
Areas of Specialization and Research His work focuses on physical and biological oceanography, climate change, El Niño Events, and their impacts on Chilean ecosystems and fisheries.
His work includes the design and management of bio-oceanographic monitoring systems and institutional data interoperability, highlighting his participation in the development and architecture of integrated monitoring and early warning systems for extreme climate events, such as the SIMMO (simmo.ifop.cl) and SIOM (siom.ifop.cl) platforms.
He has extensive experience in the development and coordination of bio-fisheries and oceanographic projects along the coast of Chile.
His interests include how the variability of oceanographic structures and oceanographic patterns influence the life history of certain species.
International Participation: He was part of the official delegation that represented Chile at the Regional High-Level Conference on the Effects of the El Niño Phenomenon and Climate Change, held in Panama City in October 2026.
Regional Projects: He has worked on the formulation of strategic development proposals, such as the project "Prospecting and monitoring of regional hydrobiological resources using plankton samples and acoustic methods" for regional Goberment.
Public Outreach: He frequently participates in media outlets (such as Radio Valparaíso and Empresa Océano) to explain the alteration of fishery resources—such as jack mackerel and anchovy—caused by rising marine temperatures and climate change.
