Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) are emerging across regions and sectors worldwide. How can these initiatives connect, learn from one another and advance towards an interoperable global digital ocean?

This online side event of the DITTO Summit 2026 will bring together the international digital ocean community for a collaborative exchange on regional needs, expectations, opportunities and challenges related to Digital Twins of the Ocean.

Through an open online whiteboard and two interactive webinars, participants will compare regional perspectives, identify shared priorities and explore practical opportunities for collaboration:

The insights gathered will feed into discussions at the DITTO Summit 2026 and contribute to the broader international dialogue on developing operational, interoperable and user-driven Digital Twins of the Ocean.

How will the dialogue work?

Contribute to a global, collaborative whiteboard and help shape a shared vision for interoperable DTOs.
Add your ideas before, during or after the webinars. The whiteboard will collect input from the global community around shared visions, ongoing initiatives, barriers, opportunities and collaborative solutions to advance DTOs.

Learn about ongoing digital twins of the ocean and other digital knowledge initiatives and join in discussing needs, motivations, expectations, opportunities and barriers to advance DTOs and collaboration across regions. This webinar will be held a 3pm UTC to facilitate broad participation from communities in Africa and America (North, Central and South America, as well as Tropical and Caribbean regions). Participants from all around the world are welcome.

Outcomes

The outcomes of the consultation process will be presented in two complementary sessions:

  • In person, at the DITTO Summit 2026 (Japan, 11-13 November)

  • Online, in a webinar (the date of the event will be confirmed soon here).

These sessions will highlight the main findings, regional priorities and recommendations emerging from the whiteboard contributions and online dialogues, supporting the development of a shared vision for global collaboration on Digital Twins of the Ocean.
