Digital Ocean Forum 2024

Digital Ocean Forum 2024

Unveiling the European Digital Twin Ocean: On June 13, 2024, a high-level hybrid event was held under the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU. Attendees discovered the prototype, co-created its future, and explored its impact on sustainability and the Green Deal. In-person attendance and online streaming were available. The third edition of the Digital Ocean Forum was organized by the European Commission under the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters with the support of Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the two main partners leading the development of EDITO-Infra on behalf of the Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet, respectively.
The Digital Ocean Forum 2024 was the occasion to unveil the prototype of the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO)  and to showcase what it, as a Commission public service, can do for the sustainable development of our blue economies and the management of our ocean resources, as well as how it contributes to the implementation of the Green Deal and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development. It brought together experts, stakeholders, policymakers and interested citizens in the co-design and co-creation of the European Digital Twin Ocean. The high-level public event was preceded by a scientific workshop, to gather further feedback and requirements from key EU and national research projects and initiatives and establish priorities for future developments with a strong user-centric approach.
Co-organized with Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute, this forum showcased how the European Digital Twin Ocean aligns with the Green Deal and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development. It demonstrated the European Digital Twin Ocean's potential to drive blue economies, support ocean conservation, and provide actionable knowledge for informed decision-making

AboutDigital Ocean Forum

The Digital Ocean Forum brings together experts, stakeholders, policymakers, and concerned citizens to collaboratively design and create the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) while charting a collective path forward to tackle this transformative endeavor. Mercator Ocean International  initiated the forum, hosting its inaugural edition in Paris in April 2022, under the auspices of the EU Commission and during the French Presidency of the European Union.

The second installment, like the third, held from June 14th to 15th, 2023, was organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research (DG RTD), the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) alongside Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ).

This gathering provided a platform to review advancements to date, inviting feedback on the objectives and ambitions achievable through the establishment of a robust European Digital Twin Ocean.
Discussions also delved into ethical considerations and explored avenues for leveraging the European Digital Twin Ocean to address pressing challenges, including the marine impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. Additionally, the forum examined how the European Digital Twin Ocean could inform policymaking and decision-making processes to foster a sustainable blue economy
