The Digital Ocean Forum brings together experts, stakeholders, policymakers, and concerned citizens to collaboratively design and create the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) while charting a collective path forward to tackle this transformative endeavor. Mercator Ocean International initiated the forum, hosting its inaugural edition in Paris in April 2022, under the auspices of the EU Commission and during the French Presidency of the European Union.
The second installment, like the third, held from June 14th to 15th, 2023, was organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research (DG RTD), the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) alongside Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ).
This gathering provided a platform to review advancements to date, inviting feedback on the objectives and ambitions achievable through the establishment of a robust European Digital Twin Ocean.
Discussions also delved into ethical considerations and explored avenues for leveraging the European Digital Twin Ocean to address pressing challenges, including the marine impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. Additionally, the forum examined how the European Digital Twin Ocean could inform policymaking and decision-making processes to foster a sustainable blue economy.
