He is integrally responsible for research, education, and operations of the faculty. The faculty is world leading in research and teaching on the Earth system and sustainability, with a unique combination of expertise in natural and social sciences. Hazeleger is closely involved in Open Science and applications of data science in sustainability research. Hazeleger studied meteorology at Wageningen University and Reading University (UK). He obtained his PhD in physical oceanography from Utrecht University. He worked at Columbia University (USA) and at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI, NL). He focuses on climate dynamics, scenarios, climate adaptation and digitization. From 2014 to 2019 he was director of the Netherlands eScience Center and worked on the application of digital technology and data science in all scientific domains. In 2019 he was appointed as full professor and dean at Utrecht University. (see Prof. dr. ir. Wilco Hazeleger - Utrecht University (uu.nl)) Digital Twins of the Earth With a background in climate research, modelling and applications for climate adaptation policy, and with an expertise in digitization (HPC, data management, and AI), Hazeleger became one of the initiators of the concept of Digital Twins of Earth. He contributed to the early development and was one of the initiators of what now is the Destination Earth (DestinE) program within Europe.
