Simon van Gennip is an oceanographer leading the Ocean Monitoring service at Mercator Ocean International. He has a background in bio-physical interactions, and a decade-long experience in research involving global ocean systems and, amongst others, understanding the transport of plastics in the marine environment. As part of the EDITO Model Lab EU project, Simon is actively involved in developing an application that uses the Digital Twin of the Ocean to provide information on the fate of plastics once it enters the oceans, and as such help decision maker to better address the growing problem of marine plastics, and contribute to the EU effort to reach its zero pollution goal.
